Analysis Of Edgar Allen Poe s The Cask Of Amontillado

That Which is Best Served Cold Perhaps one of the most pervasive morals in Edgar Allen Poe’s short stories is the idea of just retribution. This means that while a character commits a crime or performs a destructive action – such as Prospero ignoring the subjects suffering in â€Å"The Masque of Red Death† or the murder of the old man in â€Å"The Tell Tale Heart† – something of equal cruelty happens to them. In both these short stories, both characters receive just retribution. Yet another example can be found in â€Å"The Cask of Amontillado†, where Montresor claims he is giving Fortunato just retribution for his â€Å"thousand insults† (Cask) to him. The difference between this and the other two is we see things from the point of view of the one enacting the retribution, rather than the one receiving it. We can see similarities in all of these short stories as they all show tales of revenge and retribution, whether God or human given. In a kingdom with an unknown name, there was a prince named Prospero. His subjects and courtiers were dying all around him. As a prince, as a leader, one would assume he would be shocked, horrified by the death and decay caused by the ‘Red Death’. Instead of disappointment, he is gay and bright despite the horrific deaths of so many of his subjects to this pestilence and plague. Instead of ordering a cure to be found for this pestilence, he instead chooses 1000 of his closest friends to lock inside his ornate palace.
